Vacuum Sparking or Tripping the Breaker (Safety)
A vacuum that sparks visibly at the cord, switch, or motor area, or one that trips the household breaker when you turn it on, is a safety problem. Unplug it immediately and do not use it. Bring it in for free diagnosis.
Causes, ordered by likelihood
- Frayed or damaged cord. Visible exposed wire or burned insulation at the strain relief. Stop use.
- Failed switch. A failing switch can arc internally. Sparking visible at the switch housing.
- Motor short. Internal winding short trips the breaker. Motor needs replacement.
- Brush contact arcing (commutator). On older motors, worn brushes can arc visibly inside the housing. Different from a destructive short, but still a stop-use signal.
When to bring it in
Bring it in immediately. We will diagnose at no charge and tell you whether it is a cheap cord or switch fix or a motor replacement. Do not continue using a sparking vacuum.
