Vacuum Leaving Streaks or Dust Behind
A vacuum that leaves streaks behind is usually one of three things: worn brush roll bristles, the wrong height setting for the floor type, or weak suction from the upstream airflow path.
Causes, ordered by likelihood
- Worn brush bristles. Brush bars wear out over 2 to 5 years. Look at the bristles next to a new brush; they should be uniform.
- Wrong height setting. Uprights set too high don't reach the carpet pile. Drop the height until you feel resistance.
- Upstream suction loss. All the lost suction causes can leave streaks too. Run the lost-suction checklist.
- Dirt cup / bag full. A full bag changes airflow and reduces pickup.
What to check at home
- Look at the brush bar bristles. Worn bristles need replacement.
- Drop the height setting one notch and test.
- Empty the bag or canister and test again.
- If streaks remain, run the lost-suction diagnostic.

- Shark
- Shark Navigator brush rolls wear by year 3 with regular use. Replacement is cheap.
- Miele
- Miele Electro power heads rarely streak from brush wear; usually it's height or hose seal.
- Dyson
- Dyson V-series soft roller can leave streaks if hair is wrapped at the end caps.

- Why does my vacuum leave dust on hardwood?
- Usually the brush bar is rotating against bare wood and kicking dust back. Switch to a soft roller or canister with parquet head.
- How do I know if my brush roll is worn?
- Pull it and compare to a new brush. Worn brushes have flat bristles or missing tufts.
