Vacuum Keeps Shutting Off or Overheating
A vacuum that shuts off mid-use is almost always the thermal cutoff protecting the motor from overheating. The cause is a clogged airflow path somewhere: bag, hose, filter, or brush bar.
Causes, ordered by likelihood
- Clogged airflow path. Bag, hose, pre-motor filter, or brush bar restricting airflow. The motor heats up and the cutoff trips.
- Saturated post-motor filter. A clogged HEPA filter forces the motor to work harder.
- Failing thermal cutoff. Less common: the cutoff itself is failing and tripping early.
- Motor wear. An older motor with worn brushes runs hotter and trips the cutoff at lower load.
What to check at home
- Let it cool for 30 to 60 minutes before continuing diagnosis.
- Replace the bag, empty the canister.
- Inspect the hose for blockages.
- Pull and wash or replace the pre-motor filter.
- Inspect the post-motor HEPA filter.
- If overheating recurs after all four, the thermal cutoff or motor is next.
When to bring it in
Bring it in if overheating recurs after clearing the airflow path. Cutoff replacement runs $50 to $90. Motor work is $150 to $300.

Brand-specific notes
- Miele
- Miele canisters rarely overheat from blockage; when they do it's usually a year-15 HEPA filter that has not been replaced.
- Dyson
- V-series cordless show a thermal warning before they cut out. Wait for the LED, then clean the filter.
- Shark
- Shark uprights with bag-replacement vacuums and lots of fine dust are the most common overheating shutdowns. Empty the canister more often.

- How long should I wait for a vacuum to cool down?
- 30 to 60 minutes for the thermal cutoff to reset. If it trips again immediately, the airflow path is still clogged.
- Can a vacuum motor be damaged by repeated overheating?
- Yes. Repeated thermal trips wear the windings and shorten motor life.
- Is overheating my fault?
- Usually the airflow path got clogged from normal use. The fix is routine maintenance, not user error.
