Why Your Vacuum Smells Like Burning

A burning smell from a vacuum almost always means the brush bar is jammed. Hair winds at the end caps until the brush bar stops while the motor or belt keeps driving, producing burnt-rubber odor and risking motor damage. Stop using the vacuum and unplug it.

Causes, ordered by likelihood

Jammed brush bar (most common). Hair wraps at the end caps until the bar stops. The belt or motor keeps driving and burns.
Stretched or burning belt. Even without a jam, a stretched belt slips on the brush bar shaft and burns rubber.
Failing motor windings. If the brush bar is free and the belt is intact, the smell may be the motor windings overheating. Stop use.
Trapped object on motor fan. Less common: a hard object lodged on the motor fan causes friction and smell.

What to check at home

Unplug the vacuum immediately.
Pull the brush bar and check the end caps for hair wrap. Cut it free with scissors.
Inspect the belt for melted spots or stretching. Replace if visible damage.
If the brush bar is clean and the belt is fine but the smell came back, bring it in. The motor may be next.

When to bring it in

Bring it in if the smell persists after clearing the brush bar and replacing the belt. Continuing to run a vacuum with a burning motor smell damages the motor windings beyond repair.
