How to Replace a Vacuum Belt (and When to Bring It In)

Replacing a vacuum belt is a 10-minute job on most uprights. Two screws, pop the brush plate, slip the new belt over the motor pulley and brush bar shaft, reinstall. The trickier cases are stretched-bar geometry on older Hoovers and the powerhead motor belt on Miele Electro.

Causes, ordered by likelihood

Wear interval. Most brands rate belts at 6 to 18 months. Sebo and commercial uprights run longer.
Symptoms of a worn belt. Brush bar spins slowly or stops entirely, burning smell, smoke.
Belt keeps breaking. If you keep replacing belts, the brush bar bearings are likely worn and adding load.

What to check at home

Unplug the vacuum.
Remove the brush plate (usually 2 screws).
Pull the brush bar out of its end caps.
Stretch the new belt over the motor pulley first.
Loop the belt over the brush bar shaft and seat the bar back into the end caps.
Confirm the brush bar spins freely by hand. Reinstall the plate.

When to bring it in

Bring it in if the belt keeps breaking (bearing issue), if the powerhead motor belt is involved (Miele Electro), or if you would rather not deal with it. Belt installation at the shop runs $20 to $40 including the belt.

Brand-specific notes

Hoover: WindTunnel belts come in regular and 'stretch' types. The stretch belt is meant to be permanent; don't substitute a regular belt for one.
Sebo: Felix belts last several years. If a Felix belt fails early, something else is wrong.
Kirby: Kirby belts are genuine-only for warranty purposes. Style F bags use a specific belt.
Riccar / Simplicity: Tandem Air belts are shared between the brands. Same part.
