Vacuum Cord Won't Retract: Repair Options

When a canister vacuum cord won't retract the cause is one of two things: the retract spring lost tension, or the cord hook slips on the spool. Both are bench repairs in the $60 to $110 range.

Causes, ordered by likelihood

  1. Retract spring fatigue. Springs lose tension at year 8 to 12 on most canisters.
  2. Hook slip on spool. The hook that grabs the spool wears down or the spool plastic wears.
  3. Cord damage at strain relief. If the cord itself is damaged at the entry point, the spool won't pull it smoothly.

When to bring it in

Bring it in. Cord retract is not a user-fixable repair; the spring is under tension and the spool is inside the body shell.

Common questions

Why won't my vacuum cord retract?
Almost always the retract spring lost tension or the hook on the spool wore down. Both are bench repairs.
Is it safe to keep using the vacuum with no cord retract?
Yes, but the cord drags during storage and over time damages the strain relief.
