A burning smell from your Dyson is almost always one thing: hair wrapped at the end caps of the brush bar, stopping the brush while the motor or belt keeps driving. The smell is melting rubber. Stop using the vacuum and unplug it.

Why it happens

Hair (human, pet) winds at the brush bar end caps where the bar enters the cleaning head body. The wind tightens over weeks of use until the brush bar binds. The motor keeps driving the belt or, on the V-series, drives the brush bar directly. The friction generates heat. Rubber components (belt, drive coupler) burn first. If you keep using it, the motor windings burn next.

What we do on the bench

Free diagnosis: identify the jam, no charge
Pull the brush bar, cut the hair off the end caps
Inspect the belt for melted spots; replace if damaged
Inspect the drive coupler (V-series Direct Drive head)
Run the vacuum for 5 minutes to confirm the smell is gone
If the smell persists after a clean brush bar, the motor windings may be scorched. We diagnose further at that point.

Cost and turnaround

Pull and clean the brush bar monthly. 30 seconds with scissors.
