Are Aftermarket Miele Bags as Good as Genuine?

Miele bags collar onto a plastic holder inside the dust compartment. Genuine bags use a precise-fit collar that seals tightly against debris bypass. Aftermarket bags vary; some seal well, many don't. Debris that bypasses the bag enters the motor housing and accelerates wear.
Cost over 15 years
Genuine 4-pack: about $25. Aftermarket 4-pack: about $15. Over 15 years a typical household runs through 30 to 40 4-packs. Genuine: $750 to $1,000 in bags. Aftermarket: $450 to $600. Difference: $300 to $400 over 15 years.
What that $300 to $400 buys
Motor protection. A bypassing bag accelerates motor brush wear and shortens motor life by an estimated 2 to 4 years. A motor brush rebuild at year 14 runs $150 to $260 (Miele) and is worth doing. A motor brush rebuild at year 10 with worn windings: not worth doing.
When aftermarket is fine
Lower-tier vacuums (Hoover, Bissell, Eureka) where the seal isn't as critical. Or short-term use cases (sublet, sale-ready).
When genuine is the right call
Any vacuum you intend to keep 10+ years. Especially Miele, Sebo, Kirby, Riccar where the platform is rebuildable and motor protection is part of the long-term math.
