Universal Motor

A brushed AC motor design that runs on either AC or DC current. The dominant vacuum motor for the last century.

Universal motors are inexpensive to manufacture and deliver high power-to-weight ratios. The downside: carbon brushes wear out (year 12 to 18 in vacuum service) and replacement requires motor disassembly.
