What the symptom usually looks like

The vacuum does not start when switched on, starts only sometimes, or works from one control but not another.

Likely causes

Outlet or breaker problem
Cord reel or plug damage
On/off switch wear
Hose-handle control issue on models with handle controls
Thermal protection after overheating
Motor or control-board fault

Safe checks before you bring it in

Test the outlet with another appliance.
Let the vacuum cool if it shut off during use.
Fully extend and inspect the cord and plug for damage.
Check whether the vacuum starts with the canister control instead of the hose handle.
Do not keep toggling the switch if you smell electrical heat.

What to bring to the shop

Bring the canister, hose, wand, and powerhead if the model uses handle controls.
Tell us whether the failure is constant or intermittent.
Bring the vacuum with the original cord and plug intact.

Repair or replace?

Intermittent power is worth diagnosing before it becomes a complete failure. Cord reels, switches, handle controls, and thermal protection can produce similar symptoms from home.

If the vacuum is less than halfway through a normal Miele service life, repair is often the better financial choice. If the repair estimate approaches the cost of a new HomeCare model, we will say that plainly.
