Miele launched the Guard L1, M1, and S1 canister series in North America in July 2025. The Guard L1 is the new flagship. The Complete C3 family continues in parallel. Here is the honest side-by-side.

Where each one wins
Guard L1 wins when
- The household has a pet shedder or an allergy diagnosis. The default HEPA filter does meaningfully more work than Active AirClean.
- The home has wall-to-wall carpet. The self-propelled head pulls itself forward across plush carpet without the user pushing.
- You want the newest platform. Guard is what Miele will iterate on for the next decade.
Complete C3 wins when
- The home is mostly hardwood with area rugs. The C3 Marin's parquet head is still the gold standard for hardwood.
- Quiet operation is a priority. The Silence Pure Suction trim of the C3 family is the quietest current Miele canister.
- You want the platform Consumer Reports keeps recommending. The 2026 CR best-bagged canister is the C3 Marin.
- You are price-sensitive. The C3 entry trims still come in below the Guard L1 MSRP.
What the bench sees
We have serviced the C3 family for over a decade. Failure modes are predictable: bag-indicator switch (year 6 to 8), retract spring (year 8 to 12), motor brushes (year 12 to 18). The Guard L1 is too new to have aggregated failure data, but the platform is mechanically very close to the C3, so we expect similar service intervals. The HEPA AirClean filter is consumable on the same schedule as the standard AirClean (replace annually with bags or sooner with heavy pet use).

- Did the Guard L1 replace the Complete C3?
- Not entirely. Miele positions the Guard line as the new flagship canister platform but continues to manufacture the Complete C3 family in parallel as a mid-tier line. Consumer Reports' 2026 best-bagged-canister pick remains the Complete C3 Marin.
- What is the biggest functional difference?
- The Guard L1 ships with a HEPA AirClean filter as standard (the C3 family ships with Active AirClean by default; HEPA is upgrade-only). The Guard L1 also has a self-propelled carpet head not offered on the standard C3 lineup.
- Which is quieter?
- The Complete C3 Silence Pure Suction is the quietest current Miele canister at around 64 dBA. The Guard L1 runs slightly louder but still well under the typical 75 to 80 dBA of mass-market vacuums.
- Which uses cheaper bags?
- Both use Type GN AirClean 3D bags (PN 10123210, around $25 for a 4-pack with 2 filters). Bag cost is identical.
- If I already own a Complete C3, should I upgrade?
- Probably not. A working C3 has 10 to 15 years of remaining service life with proper maintenance. The Guard L1 is the right buy when a new household, or when the existing vacuum is at end-of-life. If you want the HEPA filtration upgrade and the self-propelled head specifically, that is the upgrade trigger.
